To protect the health of our community, the University System of Georgia (USG) has directed that all USG institutions will not conduct graduation ceremonies this spring.
Georgia Tech Spring Commencement will not take place May 1 and 2, 2020. We understand how disappointing this news is for our graduates, their families, and their supporters. We will recognize our Spring 2020 graduates with an online celebration on Friday, May 1, 2020, combined with an in-person ceremony on campus later this year. Additional information will be posted as soon as it is available.
Why did Georgia Tech decide to do this?
In keeping with guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to avoid gatherings of more than 50 people, we are suspending large events at Georgia Tech. The University System of Georgia has directed all institutions to cancel public events for the remainder of spring semester, including Commencement.
Is the ceremony being rescheduled?
We are evaluating that option. We recognize the importance of this day to our students and their supporters and want to find the best solution that honors our graduates while keeping our community safe.
When will you decide on your alternate plan?
At this time we do not have a date. We understand students and families will need ample time to make arrangements to participate. We will communicate any updates as soon as we can. Spring graduates may register an email address with the Commencement Office to receive updates after graduation.
Will I still earn my degree?
Yes, students will still earn their degrees and be able to graduate this semester, consistent with academic standards.
Will I still receive my diploma?
Yes, diplomas will still mail out four to six weeks after the end of term. Students could confirm their diploma mailing address through April 10 through our RSVP form. Diploma questions should be address to the Registrar's Office.
What if I’m unable to attend the new ceremony date?
We will have full guidelines available for students once a new date is selected.
Will I receive a refund on my regalia?
Barnes & Noble at Georgia Tech will accept unopened regalia for a refund from Spring 2020 graduates up until April 30, 2020, with their receipts. Without a receipt, refunds will need to be determined on a case-by-case basis and can only be for a store credit at the lowest selling price. Students may contact the bookstore to schedule an in-person return or mail their regalia back to receive a fund. Unfortunately, the bookstore cannot cover the cost to mail back regalia.
If you did not pick up your pre-paid and online order regalia, email the bookstore at SM225@bncollege.com for a refund.
Will bachelor's students still receive their honor cords? Will doctoral students still receive their hood?
Yes, students will still receive these items from the Institute. We will have information on how students can receive these items once we determine when we will hold our in-person ceremony.
Do I have to participate in the online celebration?
No, students are not required to participate. This is an optional event to acknowledge the achievements of our Spring 2020 graduates.
I'm a summer graduate who applied to participate in the spring ceremony. Will I be included?
Our May 1 celebration focuses on our spring graduates only. Summer gradutes will be included in our rescheduled spring ceremony. Everyone is welcome to post and participate, but we will not have a graduation slide for summer graduates.
